Does it surprise you to learn that most of our FDA regulation and dietary recommendations have been shaped by the very people who lobby for large food companies?
Did you think that products which are sold in the US marketplaces were really unhealthy that the FDA would protect us?
We did too.
We found out that Generally Regarded As Safe (GRAS) is so full of loopholes that its rendered ineffective and outdated. Big food and agriculture keep blaming consumer demand. They justifying that if the people didn’t want or like manufactured food and food-like substances, then they wouldn’t keep buying them.
These manufactured and processed foods are made to promote shelf life, not human life. They are packed full of preservatives and synthetic ingredients. Food chemists design these foods to be highly addictive, leaving you craving more, which leaves to over-eating and overconsumption because the brain does not feel sated.
As consumers, we are often not given fair opportunity to know what is really in our food or what its lifecycle has been, because the regulations are marketing claims are so confusing, convoluted and vague. Take the phrase “all natural” as a great example, it means nothing as far as regulation goes, but implies to consumers that the product is healthy is someway.
So we did some more research and found some ingredients you will want to look for and avoid purchasing or consuming on a regular basis.
INGREDIENTS TO AVOID
Animal meat coming from Confined Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO’s)
Apricot kernels (also known as B-17)
Artificial flavors or secret flavor ingredients
Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA)
Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT)
Cloned animals/cloned animal dairy products
Fresh dairy products from confinement dairies or cows given rBGH (recombinant BGH)
GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) salmon or any other GMO animal/seafood product
GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) fruits or vegetables or any other food product made from these ingredients.
Hydrogenated and/or partially hydrogenated oils
MSG (Monosodium glutamate)
Nitrites and Nitrates
Phosphate Food Additives
Sugar, processed sugar and sugar syrups
Cane juice crystals
Corn syrup solids
Evaporated cane juice
Fruit juice concentrate
High-fructose corn syrup
We realize that it may not be possible or desirable to completely abstain from this list of ingredients, however we would encourage you to become familiar with this list and make educated decisions about the products you choose. If you are going to purchase processed food, it is recommended you choose organic brands that are low in refined sugars with ingredients you can understand.
Send a message to big food companies by “voting with your pocketbook” every time you are at the grocery store and let them know you care about the food you feed yourself and your family.
Learning to read labels and choosing a whole-food meal pan that is rich in plants, healthy fats and a variety of proteins, is the easiest way to ensure are avoiding these ingredients.
